The rapid growth in the ageing population is a global challenge. The sustainability of an ageing society depends on our effectiveness in leveraging innovation and technological advancements, including assistive technology and inclusive design, to enable independent living and social participation so that older adults could be assured of good health, dignity, comfort and safety.
In Oct 2016, a delegation from the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) visited the International Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition (HCRE) in Japan and returned with insights. The Council therefore set up the Innovation and Technology for Ageing (ITA) unit to promote the adoption of gerontechnology in the local community.
Further discussions were held between HKCSS, the government and stakeholders from various concerned sectors. To initiate the discussion in public and ignite the momentum, the first GIES was scheduled for 16-18 June, 2017 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).
