Welcoming Message

I cordially invite you to support and participate in the Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) to be held on 22 to 25 November 2018 in Hong Kong.

GIES is a flagship event organised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service to promote technological application and innovation as a promising solution to enhance the quality of life of the elderly in both the community and institutional settings.  The inaugural GIES held in June 2017 attracted very encouraging response and feedback from the participants and the community. It successfully aroused interest in and awareness of the role of technology and innovation in promoting active and healthy ageing in Hong Kong.

Riding on the success of GIES in 2017, we are committed to building GIES as an effective platform for discussion and exchanges to promote and drive technology-based solutions to meet the needs of our ageing population.  It also serves as an important forum to showcase and identify good practices.

I look forward to your support and participation to GIES 2018.

In 2017, the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government co-hosted the first Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES), marking the milestone for adopting innovation and technology to improve the quality of life of elders and their carers in Hong Kong.

The Expo attracted a total of 43,000 visitors.  Representatives from relevant government departments, elderly service industry, research institutes, manufacturers, media, as well as the public were given an opportunity to better understand the development of gerontechnology across the world.

GIES is not only a public education programme that promotes the use of gerontech.  The HKCSS also makes use of the event to build the link between products and services, and accelerate technology adoption in elderly and rehabilitation care.  Examples include: product trials at service units, and bringing in new resources for NGOs to provide new services using gerontech products.  Besides, the 2017 Policy Address announced the setting up of a one billion-dollar fund to subsidize elderly and rehabilitation units to purchase gerontech products.  This is indeed an encouraging outcome of our policy advocacy efforts.

GIES scheduled for November this year will showcase more local and overseas innovative products for visitors to examine their unique features and applications.  This will definitely be an eye opening experience for everyone.  We look forward to your participation and support.
